speaking to me

There's an old Ani Difranco lyric that says it all "every pop song on the radio seems to be speaking to me..." So here are the voices that i've heard most clearly over the last few months. The last one being the most prevelant this week.

all the girls in every girly magazine
cant make me feel any less alone
i'm reaching for the phone
to call at 7:03
and on your machine i slur a plea for you to come home
but i know that it's too late
i should have given you a reason to stay

all my peers they criticize me,
and my ex-wives all despise me,
try to put it all behind me,
but my redneck past is nipping at my heels.

-- Ben Folds, the Army

And every time I've held a rose
It seems I only felt the thorns
And so it goes, and so it goes
And so will you soon I suppose

-- Billy Joel, And So It Goes

Now I'm drunk as hell on a piano bench
And when I press the keys
It all gets reversed
The sound of loneliness makes me happier

-- Poison Oak, Bright Eyes

and there's no blame
for how our love did slowly fade
and now that it's gone
it's like it wasn't there at all
and here i rest
where disappointment and regret collide
lying awake at night.

i'm going to do my best swan dive
in the shark-infested waters
i'm gonna pull out my tampon
and start splashing around

'cuz i don't care if they eat me alive
i've got better thing to do than survive
i've got a memory of your warm skin in my hand
and i've got a vision of blue sky and dry land

-- Swan Dive, Ani Difranco
